Live Blogging From Metropolitan Gobblers Knob

When you go to a funeral in Caswell County, North Carolina, that means you eat. Current count, according to Uncle Henry is 19 pies, 25 cakes. The current count on boxes of chicken, roughly 10.... This is no joke.

This is a small community and I think just about everybody that lives here showed up at the church for visitation. It's unreal. This is why I wanted to come. I wanted these kids to experience closeness with family and neighbors like they never have. We're all glad we're here.

More later.

That's what we small town people do. We cook for funerals.
It's our way.
I do it too, beleive it or not.

I was so glad that you decided you needed to go.

And as bad as it sounds, funerals are the only time most of my family does get together to 'be family'. Cause usually, we are too scattered about and too busy with jobs and life in general for everyone to come to a reunion.

My condolences to your whole family.

I made it a point to buy a "marryin' and buryin'" suit that was scotchguarded so I could drop food on it.

Come back safe.

That's the only nice thing about someone dying- The food. And it's sad, isn't it, that that's the only time you'll see some relatives? I always wish I had more time to get to know some of the people who show up out of the woodwork- and eerie how much they resemble other, closer relatives...

I'm glad you're glad you're there. :)

I really miss that part of the church I grew up in. All the home cooking in surplus for various functions. It was a smaller community then and better. It is nice to see such community still exists, even if the purpose for being there is not pleasant.

Oh, I do it too. Just this past Monday I took a Green Bean Casserole to the church so they could feed a family that had just had a funeral. This man had been a Sunday School teacher to both Smiff boys. I wasn't able to see the family at the visitation and wanted them to know how much I cared. I don't know about other denominations, but, the Baptist women still get with it in the kitchen whenever the need arises.
